It has been 23 years since the tragic events of September 11, 2001, a day that forever changed our nation. To honor the nearly 3,000 lives lost and to pay tribute to the heroic efforts of first responders, the Macon-Bibb Law Enforcement Foundation held its annual 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, at Public Safety Memorial Park.
The solemn event served as a poignant reminder of the resilience and unity of our nation. “Terrorist attacks can shake the foundation of our buildings, but not the foundation of our people. Always remember that we were targeted because we are the brightest beacon for freedom and opportunity,” said Warren Selby of the Macon-Bibb Law Enforcement Foundation. “The memory of those who died on 9/11 reminds us why we must continue to fight evil.”
Honoring Sacrifice and Service
The ceremony featured a moving Presentation of Colors by the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office and Macon-Bibb County Fire Department Honor Guard. Representatives from the Fire Department and Sheriff’s Office placed roses on the Memorial, a symbol of Macon-Bibb’s enduring commitment to remember and honor the sacrifices made by public safety personnel.
A wreath was placed at the Memorial to honor the lives lost on 9/11 and the ongoing dedication of men and women in public safety. The haunting melody of “Amazing Grace,” performed by bagpiper Scott Gunn, filled the park, bringing attendees together in solemn reflection.
The ceremony concluded with a breathtaking flyover by Georgia State Patrol’s aviation unit, a stirring tribute to the bravery of those who protect and serve our communities.
