Bibb County Fire Department Upgrades Scuba Gear for Rescue Divers

Macon-Bibb Law Enforcement Foundation

The Bibb County Fire Department’s rescue divers have received a significant upgrade to their scuba gear, thanks to a $7,500 grant from the Macon-Bibb Law Enforcement Foundation. The new equipment aims to improve the safety and efficiency of rescue efforts at locations like Amerson River Park and Lake Tobesofkee in Macon, GA, where three tragic drowning incidents occurred earlier this year.

Fire Chief Shane Edwards thanks the Macon-Bibb Law Enforcement Foundation for providing new scuba equipment to aid the Fire Department dive team in water emergencies.

Dive team member Casey Boothe emphasized the challenges posed by their aging gear, noting that wear and tear could impact their performance. While the new gear may not necessarily speed up rescue operations, it will allow divers to perform their duties more effectively.

Sheriff David Davis highlighted the collaboration between the sheriff’s office and the fire department during a press conference at Amerson River Park. Although the sheriff’s office no longer operates its own dive team, the grant-funded gear will support the fire department’s emergency rescue efforts, reinforcing their role as first responders in water-related incidents.
